How Does Diabetes Effect Your Mouth?

Written by Nov 6 • 1 minute read

People with diabetes often think about possible long-term complications such as heart disease and nerve damage. But they should not forget about what is going on in their mouth.  Good dental care and diabetes care have a direct impact on their future ability to chew and smile.

Did you know diabetes can also cause problems in your mouth?  People with diabetes have a higher chance of having periodontal (gum) disease, an infection of the gum and bone that hold the teeth in place.  Periodontal disease can lead to pain, persistent bad breath, chewing difficulties, and even tooth loss.
It is important that Dr Fika carefully reviews your medical history.  With Diabetes, especially if you have high blood sugar levels, you are at a higher risk for dental problems.  High blood sugar can damage gums and teeth in the same way that it can damage the heart eyes and nerves.

How Diabetes Effects Your Mouth

Other problems diabetes can cause are dry mouth and thrush - a fungal infection which causes painful white patches in your mouth. Dry mouth is more common and can result in soreness, ulcers, infections and tooth decay
