What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is the inflammation and infection of the gum tissue due to bacteria that have developed from leftover food debris and plaque. There are three stages of gum disease: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Patients who are, not diligent with their oral health at home can develop mild to moderate stages of gum disease. Signs you may have developed some stage of gum disease include:

  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
  • Spacing between teeth
  • Receding gum lines and exposed roots
  • Red and puffy gums

Patients who have habits such as smoking may need additional sessions of gum disease treatment to effectively restore their gum health. This infection causes tenderness and discomfort, as the bacteria, plaque, and calculus irritate the gums and teeth.

Laser Gum Disease Treatment in Edmonton

During your consultation, Dr. Fika will take an in-depth look at your gums and measure the depth of gum pockets to determine the stage of gum disease you are at. He then recommends the type of treatment needed to restore the health of your gums.

Scaling and root planing allows the doctor to remove the debris and plaque that feeds that bacteria that inflames and irritates the gum tissue. Also known as a deep cleaning, this is done in quadrants to ensure effective removal and patient comfort during treatment. Dr. Fika uses an Epic X Laser between your teeth and gums. Known to be highly effective at eradicating bacteria, as well as removing infected gum tissue, the laser helps in the contouring and shaping of the gums. This treatment is usually paired with gum disease maintenance, where we invite patients back to our Edmonton practice to receive specialized cleanings every 3 to 4 months to prevent the development of the infection further.

Depending on the severity of the infection, extractions may be necessary, and Dr. Fika will recommend an array of teeth replacement options to ensure sustained oral health and function. However, with proper oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits, gum disease can be discovered and addressed early.
